Continuing to move southwest, parallel to the coast, the cyclone intensified slightly to reach a maximum intensity by 0000 UTC 3 February near 16.7°S, 121.S°E. Karratha Airport recorded the highest wind gust of 194km/h at 2:31pm AWST 8 February. Widespread totals of 100 to 200mm and isolated falls up to 235mm were recorded near the Pilbara coast. The system continued to move inland weakening on 9 February and the remnant tropical low tracked southeast over the inland Pilbara, eastern Gascoyne and northern Goldfields. The Bureau of Meteorology's Dampier radar sustained significant damage during the passage of Damien. Gales occurred along the Pilbara coast from early morning on 8 February, with Barrow Island, Mardie, Varanus Island, Karratha Airport, Roebourne Airport and Legendre Island all recording a period of sustained gales. The low moved offshore, near the Dampier Peninsula, north of Broome during 5 February. Ginginjibby recorded 153.2mm in the 72 hours to 9am AWST 11 February. The following rivers/catchments were impacted: West, North and Eastern Kimberley, Ashburton, Pilbara Coastal Streams, Fortescue, Gascoyne, Murchison, De Grey and Salt Lake Rivers District.Damien delivered rainfall and river flows to Pastoral areas that had been drier than average for at least two years and filled many dams and water resources including the Harding Dam, the main water supply for the Karratha/ Dampier areas.Tropical Cyclone Damien was the third tropical cyclone and the second severe tropical cyclone in the Australian region for the 2019/20 season. The season officially began on 1 November 2019 and ended on 30 April 2020; however, tropical cyclones can form at any time of year, as evidenced by Tropical Cyclone Mangga during May 2020. A series of frontal passages to the south of the continent with subsequent advection of cold air into the cyclone caused it to weaken. Extensive vegetation damage was reported and there was some damage to property, including Karratha Airport.Heavy rainfall caused flooding initially through the Kimberley when the system was a tropical low, then through the Pilbara and eastern Gascoyne. The strongest observed wind (83 km/h) was recorded by a ship 150 km to the north of the storm at 1200 UTC 3 February. Cyclonic intensity was not attained until 2100 UTC 1 February at 15.5°S, 123.3°E, with a central pressure of 988 hPa. The low moved steadily westward north of the mid-latitude ridge and intensified in a low-shear environment. The resulting tropical depression moved erratically westward and by 0000 UTC 9 February at 20.0°S, 111.0°E had dissipated. All times in WST - subtract 8 hours to convert to UTC. As such, any system existing between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020 would count towards the season total. The cyclone brought winds of up to 205kph Tropical Cyclone Damien crossed over the coast yesterday afternoon as a category three system and brought severe, destructive winds, torrential rainfall and storm surges. A tropical low formed over land in the Kimberley, about 190km southeast of Kununurra on 3 February 2020 before tracking west. The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed Severe Tropical Cyclone Damien has reached the coast near Dampier, with its effects being felt at the industrial port and the nearby city of Karratha. Cyclone Damien formed on Thursday afternoon in warm waters off WA's north and is set to be the first severe tropical cyclone to make landfall in Australia this season. The environment became more favourable as Damien moved west southwest and it went through a period of rapid intensification during the morning of 7 February, developing from a category 1 to a category 3 system in 9 hours. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is forecasting a coastal crossing between Karratha and Port Hedland on Saturday.
