Despite being a youthful-looking 72, acknowledges that the cycle of life is winding its way down for the iconic drummer who is forever ingrained in the rock and roll history book as being the timekeeper on such classic tracks as “Fortunate Son,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain” and “Bad Moon Rising.”But recognizing one’s mortality doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road. It was 20 years ago that childhood friends Doug Clifford and Stu Cook started getting together to blow a few layers of dust off the songs they'd recorded with John and Tom Fogerty back when they were running classic singles up the pop charts as Creedence Clearwater Revival. He has also released a solo album, and been a member of the Don Harrison Band.
I think John was afraid that if Tom had a hit, he'd lose control. Songs would come out of those jams and we never got credit. But Clifford also speaks with glowing admiration for Fogerty's songwriting abilities and, by the end, it's clear that he just wishes things had turned out differently for everyone involved.Interestingly enough, at the 20-year reunion of the Fillmore, I saw a lot of these guys from the local psychedelic bands and had an interesting chat. Stu and I have a gift we've had since we were old enough to figure out how to play together. And he was just wonderful. I'm very disappointed in a guy I would have jumped in front of a bullet for at a certain point in my life. But you love them because they're family. We knew we weren't.But I'm 70 years old. Thank God for the music. And although a couple of the faces may be different in front of him, and he is no longer that San Francisco Bay-area teenager in a garage band with big talent and even bigger dreams, for Clifford, the feeling is the same as it was all those years ago. They said, "You know, we used to knock you guys and put you down but we were doing everything in our power to get a single of our own." For well over forty years, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Doug “Cosmo” Clifford has been laying it down deep, fat, and swinging. I'm not trying to take away anything from John but, you know, he's been struggling since the breakup of the band through his solo career and it just hasn't worked. I love these guys we're with.
